Hoy vamos a conocer a Cathal, senior teacher de la Escuela Cambridge House La Vaguada en la zona norte de Madrid.
How long have you been working in Cambridge House and what is your job?
(¿Cuánto tiempo llevas trabajando en Cambridge House y cuál es tu puesto?)
I’ve been working in Cambridge House for 5 years as a teacher and this year I am looking forward to starting my new position as Senior Teacher.
Llevo cinco años trabajando en Cambridge House como profesor de inglés y este curso tengo ilusión por empezar en mi nuevo puesto de Profesor Senior.
What is a normal working day like for you in CH?
(¿Cómo es un día normal de trabajo en Cambridge House?)
I work in the afternoon so in the morning I have free time to go shopping, do things at home, cook, go out for walks with my dog and get organised! I arrive at the school at about 3pm where I greet the team and our super nice and smiley receptionist. I have a cup of tea and check I have all the materials ready for my prepared lessons. These might be interactive games, videos, debates, songs and conversation themes and there will always be a section about grammar and vocabulary corresponding to these activities.
Once everything is ready, I start my classes. I have lots of fun with the students and we talk about all manner of topics. I always try to create an open and non-judgemental atmosphere so that everyone feels free to speak. There are more serious moments, conversational moments as well as more traditional learning at times.
I teach 4 groups a day and finish at 10pm.
Trabajo por la tarde, entonces por la mañana tengo tiempo libre para hacer las compras, hacer cosas en casa, cocinar, pasear a mi perro y organizarme.
Llego a la escuela sobre las tres. Saludo al equipo y a nuestra recepcionista súper simpática y sonriente. Me tomo un té y verifico que tengo todo el material para mis clases ya preparado. Pueden ser juegos interactivos, videos, debates, canciones, temas de conversación, y hay una parte de gramática o de vocabulario correspondiente a las actividades.
Una vez todo preparado, doy las clases. Me divierto mucho con los alumnos, hablamos de un montón de cosas e intento crear un ambiente agradable, abierto y libre de prejuicios para que todos puedan aprender sin vergüenza. Hay momentos más serios y momentos de conversación o de aprendizaje más tradicional. Tengo cuatro grupos cada día y acabo a las 22h.
What’s the best part of your job?
(¿Cuál es la mejor parte de tu trabajo?)
Definitely the contact with the students and the opportunity to see them improve their English level throughout the year.
I have had students who couldn’t communicate at the beginning of the year. Little by little, they gain self-confidence and learn to communicate in a faster, more fluent and natural way. Many got ot work in anglo-saxon countries or study abroad. I feel a lot of satisfaction as I see their progress.
El contacto con los alumnos y la posibilidad de verles mejorar su nivel de inglés a lo largo del año.
Tengo alumnos que no podían comunicarse al principio del curso. Poco a poco ganan confianza en ellos mismos y aprenden a expresarse de manera más rápida, fluida y natural. Muchos van a trabajar en países anglosajones o estudian fuera de España. Me da mucha satisfacción observar su progreso.
What do you think of the Online English classes?
(¿Qué te parecen las clases de inglés online?)
I think they are fantastic! We are well prepared to offer online classes and our materials are easy to adapt for the online format.
I have Spanish classes online myself and it is a very practical and comfortable way of learning.
A mí me parecen “súper guay”. Están bien preparados y los materiales se adaptan para el formato online.
La verdad es que hago mis clases de español online – es una manera muy cómoda de aprender.
Why do you enjoy teaching English?
(¿Por qué te gusta enseñar inglés?)
I really love meeting people and being able to help them discover another language, culture and world.
With a better level of English, they can travel more easily, meet new people, read books by famous writers in their original language, find new jobs and change their lives. From an interest or need new horizons can appear for both children and adults.
Me encanta el contacto con la gente y poder ayudarles a descubrir otro mundo, idioma y cultura.
Pueden viajar con más facilidad, conocer gente nueva, leer libros de escritores famosos en el idioma original, encontrar nuevos puestos de trabajo y cambiar sus vidas. De una curiosidad o necesidad puedan nacer nuevos horizontes, tanto para niños como para adultos.
Which levels do you enjoy teaching most and why?
(¿A qué niveles te gustan más enseñar y por qué?)
I like teaching the intermediate level (B1) very much and also First Certificate (B2) because there are grammar topics to be learnt and the students really notice how they improve their level. However, to tell the truth I don’t really have favourite levels as the challenge is different for every group.
Me gusta mucho dar clases al nivel intermedio (B1) y First preparación de examen de Cambridge (B2) porque hay temas de gramática que aprenden y pueden notar que suben mucho de nivel. Pero, para ser honesto, no tengo un nivel preferido porque el desafío es diferente por cada nivel.
In 3 words can you describe the qualities you think a student needs to do a Cambridge exam?
En tres palabras, describe las cualidades que necesita un alumno para presentarse a un curso de preparación de exámenes de Cambridge.
To be motivated, hard-working, and have a good sense of humour!
Estar motivado, ser trabajador y tener sentido del humor.
