- The grass is always greener on the other side – a menudo tenemos envidia de los demás y pensamos que su situación es mejor que la nuestra, sin apreciar lo que tenemos.
‘I was considering moving to Canada because I think it would be more interesting to live there. But then again, the grass is always greener on the other side, as the saying goes.’
- Across the pond – al otro lado del Océano Atlántico.
‘Across the pond you’ll find that the English language changes quite a bit!’
- Living under a rock – para describir a alguien que no sabe nada de sucesos importantes. Normalmente se usa de forma interrogativa y con ironía y sorpresa.
‘You don’t know that Donald Trump lost the last presidential election?! Have you been living under a rock?’
- Make a mountain out of a molehill – tomarse algo demasiado en serio, darle demasiada importancia a cierto tema.
‘Carol, you are making a mountain out of a molehill. Yes, Will was wrong but what he did doesn’t really matter much now.’
- Man Cave – se refiere a una zona de la casa, a menudo en el sótano, que utiliza el hombre de la casa, tal vez tiene allí un taller o televisor para ver deporte. Es una frase que se usa más en EEUU.
‘Let’s make sure we buy a house with a basement. I really need a man cave where I can relax.’
- Out in the sticks – en un sitio remoto, lejos de la cuidad.
‘That restaurant is way out in the sticks. It takes an hour to drive there but it’s worth it as the food is amazing!’
- Over the hill – mayor y ya no en la flor de la vida.
‘Our striker is over the hill – we need to start looking for a replacement for him.’
- Over the moon – extremadamente feliz.
‘Gina was over the moon when she was offered her dream job.’
- The coast is clear – nadie está mirando, está seguro.
‘You can come out from under the bed now. The coast is clear.’
- Slippery slope – una serie de efectos no deseados que podrían dar un resultado negativo o dañino.
‘Alcohol may not seem to be a strong drug but some argue that it can put you on the slippery slope to addiction.’
- Stem the tide – parar o controlar el crecimiento de algo, normalmente algo desagradable.
‘In order to stem the tide of intolerance, the president named a racially and religiously diverse cabinet.’
- Swim against the tide – hacer algo en contra de las tendencias, modas o costumbres actuales.
‘He’s a fashion designer who always swims against the tide. His designs are consistently original.’
- Test the waters – probar algo con cautela.
‘Let’s test the waters in the European market with sales in three cities. If it goes well, we’ll roll out the product everywhere.’
- Water under the bridge – un suceso del pasado del cual ya no vale la pena preocuparse.
‘I’m really sorry we fell out about the party invitations.’ – ‘Don’t worry, that’s water under the bridge now and it doesn’t matter anymore!’
